While driving to the beach I was thinking about spectrums and “lines” and “thresholds”…what is the threshold of right vs wrong? Life is full of grey areas. Picking your nose for example was one that I used last night with Ann. If the mucus flows down the back of my throat that is considered normal functioning. If the mucus flows down the back of my throat because I sniff very hard some societies view that as “improper”, however if the mucus goes out the front of my nose and then in my mouth and down my throat somehow that is “disgusting”. Why is this so? These lines exist in all regards, the line between something as simple as a “lie”; sometimes those are very obvious. Sometimes they’re not. Unfortunately, I believe that all religions attempt to define the lines for so many aspects of life. For example, the Mormon church started out with an amazing idea of personal communion and revelation from God (something that I believe in completely) but then slowly overtime and for sometimes not clearly inspired reasons rules were added that then became commandments (Word of Wisdom) and “the philosophies of men got mingled with scriptures”. More and more ideas get introduced as commandments and soon you have a situation where the most fundamental thing “Love” doesn’t even make the “top 10” on the things that are focused on each meeting.
